What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in which the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed, thickened, and tight. This leads to progressive stiffness and pain that can severely limit your range of motion. Simple tasks like reaching overhead, dressing, or sleeping on the affected side become difficult or impossible.

Frozen shoulder typically develops in three stages: the freezing stage (increasing pain and stiffness), the frozen stage (stiffness at its peak with pain potentially decreasing), and the thawing stage (gradual return of movement). The entire cycle can last one to three years, and for some patients, full mobility never returns on its own.

Standard treatments include cortisone injections, aggressive physical therapy, hydrodilatation, and manipulation under anesthesia. While these help some patients, many find themselves stuck in the frozen stage with limited improvement despite months of effort.

Is radiation therapy safe for frozen shoulder? +

Yes. The dose used is roughly 10 to 25 times lower than the dose used to treat cancer and is targeted to only the affected shoulder. Decades of use in Europe have not shown an increased cancer risk at these low doses, and side effects are rare — occasionally mild, temporary skin redness.

Can low-dose radiation therapy help frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)? +

It is used to reduce the inflammation in the shoulder capsule that drives the pain and stiffness, so that the physical therapy you are already doing has a better chance of working. Published European series report meaningful pain improvement in the majority of treated patients. It is not a replacement for therapy, and individual results vary.

What if physical therapy and a steroid injection haven't helped my frozen shoulder? +

That is a good time to ask about LDRT. When therapy and an injection haven't calmed the painful, stiff phase, low-dose radiation therapy targets the underlying inflammation so rehabilitation is easier — a non-surgical option to explore before considering a procedure.

Do I need a referral? +

Does it hurt? +

Are there side effects? +

Will it cause cancer? +

The dose used for benign conditions is 10 to 25 times lower than the dose used to treat cancer. Long-term studies in Germany — where LDRT has been used for decades — have not shown an increased cancer risk at these low doses. We do not treat patients under 40 except in specific circumstances.

How quickly will I feel better? +

Most patients begin noticing relief between 6 and 12 weeks after their final session. About 70% report meaningful improvement.

How long does relief last? +

Typically 12 to 24 months. A second course can be given if symptoms return.

What if it doesn't work for me? +

Is it covered by insurance? +

Most benign musculoskeletal conditions require 6 to 8 weekday sessions, scheduled on consecutive business days so you complete a full course in under two weeks. Each session takes about 15 minutes. Some skin and fibrotic conditions follow different protocols — your consultation will clarify what fits your situation.

Is Low-Dose Radiation Therapy safe?

The dose used for benign conditions is a small fraction of cancer-treatment radiation — roughly 10–25× lower — delivered in a few short sessions. Low-dose radiation therapy for benign disease has decades of clinical use, and side effects are uncommon and typically mild.
